A rehabilitation approach based on principles of learning and neuroplasticity in which patients reacquire motor skills lost due to neurological injury through task-specific, repetitive practice.

Motor relearning is a theoretical framework and practical approach in neurorehabilitation, drawing on motor learning science to restore functional movement following brain or spinal cord injury. It emphasises task-specific practice, feedback (intrinsic and extrinsic), the importance of active patient engagement, and the avoidance of unnecessary compensation strategies. Motor Relearning Programme (MRP) is a formalised version developed by Carr and Shepherd. Editors should hyphenate 'motor-relearning' only when used as a compound modifier before a noun (e.g., 'motor-relearning programme'). The concept is closely linked to neuroplasticity and use-dependent cortical reorganisation. Do not confuse with 'motor learning', which applies to skill acquisition in unimpaired individuals.
