The neurological level of injury (NLI) is a standardised descriptor used in spinal cord injury assessment, defined by the International Standards for Neurological Classification of Spinal Cord Injury (ISNCSCI) as the most caudal segment of the spinal cord with intact bilateral sensory and motor function. It is expressed using a letter–number combination corresponding to the vertebral level (e.g., C6, T4, L2). Editors must note that the neurological level may differ from the skeletal (bony) level of injury and from the motor or sensory levels assessed separately for each side. Documents should consistently use the full form on first mention, followed by the abbreviation 'NLI' thereafter. The phrase is not hyphenated.
