Task-Specific Training

A rehabilitation intervention approach in which patients repeatedly practise the actual functional tasks they need to relearn, rather than component exercises in isolation.

Full Definition

Task-specific training (TST) is grounded in motor learning theory and neuroplasticity principles, positing that the most effective way to restore a function is to practise the specific task in its natural context and with its full movement pattern. It is distinguished from impairment-based approaches that train strength or range of motion as prerequisites. In rehabilitation documentation, it frequently appears in descriptions of upper-limb stroke rehabilitation, locomotor training, and transfer training programmes. Editors should note that the term is hyphenated when used attributively (task-specific training programme) but may appear as a noun phrase without hyphenation in some style guides. It should not be conflated with general exercise or with constraint-induced movement therapy, which is a subset.

Usage

Usage note: Hyphenate when used as an attributive modifier before a noun (e.g., 'task-specific training protocol'). Confirm author preference between 'task-specific' and 'task-oriented' as these have subtly different theoretical underpinnings.
