Full Definition
Cerebellar ataxia is a neurological condition involving impaired coordination and balance resulting from damage to the cerebellum or its connecting pathways. Symptoms typically include unsteady gait, difficulty with fine motor control, intention tremor, dysmetria (overshooting targets), and dysdiadochokinesia (impaired rapid alternating movements). Speech may also be affected, producing scanning or explosive dysarthria. Cerebellar ataxia can result from various causes including stroke, tumors, genetic disorders, toxic exposures, or degenerative diseases affecting the cerebellum.

Usage note: Specify cerebellar origin to distinguish from other forms of ataxia (sensory, vestibular).
