disconnection syndrome

A constellation of cognitive and behavioral symptoms resulting from interruption of white matter pathways connecting different brain regions.

Full Definition

Disconnection syndrome refers to neurological and neuropsychological deficits that occur when white matter tracts connecting different brain regions are damaged or severed. This can result from various causes including stroke, trauma, surgery (such as corpus callosotomy), or degenerative diseases affecting white matter. Symptoms depend on which connections are affected and may include difficulties with language, visual-spatial processing, motor coordination, or interhemispheric transfer of information. Classic examples include conduction aphasia (arcuate fasciculus damage) and split-brain syndrome (corpus callosum lesions). The concept emphasizes that brain function depends not only on individual regions but also on their interconnections.
