Dyscalculia is a specific learning disorder that impairs mathematical abilities and numerical cognition despite adequate instruction and normal general intelligence. The condition affects various aspects of mathematical processing including number sense, calculation procedures, mathematical reasoning, and spatial representation of numbers. Dyscalculia can be developmental (present from early childhood) or acquired following brain injury, particularly to the parietal lobes. Unlike acalculia, which refers to complete loss of mathematical ability following brain damage, dyscalculia represents a specific deficit in mathematical learning and processing.
