MSE
Also written as: MSE — Mental Status Examination
Mental Status Examination - a systematic assessment of a person's psychological functioning and cognitive state at the time of evaluation.
Full Definition
The Mental Status Examination (MSE) is a structured clinical assessment tool that evaluates various domains of psychological functioning including appearance, behavior, speech, mood, affect, thought process, thought content, perception, cognition, insight, and judgment. In community psychiatry, the MSE provides a snapshot of a client's mental state and helps inform diagnostic impressions and treatment planning. Unlike psychological testing, the MSE relies on clinical observation and interview techniques. Regular MSE documentation tracks changes in mental status over time and supports clinical decision-making regarding medication adjustments, safety planning, and level of care needs.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from MSE meaning 'Masters of Science in Engineering' in non-clinical contexts.
