Psychiatric Advanced Practice Registered Nurse

A registered nurse with graduate-level specialisation in psychiatric and mental health care, authorised in many jurisdictions to diagnose, prescribe psychotropic medications, and provide psychotherapy.

Full Definition

A Psychiatric Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (PMHNP—Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, the most common contemporary title) holds a master's or doctoral degree with a psychiatric nursing specialisation and has passed a national certification examination. In community psychiatry, PMHNPs often function as prescribing clinicians in outreach settings, rural communities, or as part of ACT teams where access to psychiatrists is limited. Editors must distinguish PMHNP from 'psychiatric nurse' (a registered nurse working in a psychiatric setting but without advanced practice authority) and from 'psychiatric nurse practitioner' (acceptable synonym). Scope of prescriptive authority varies by state.

Usage

Usage note: Prefer 'Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)' as the contemporary standard title; 'Psychiatric Advanced Practice Registered Nurse' is an older designation. Confirm which title the credentialing body uses in the target jurisdiction.
