In community psychiatry settings, scope of practice defines the boundaries of what each class of professional—psychiatrist, licensed clinical social worker, marriage and family therapist, psychiatric nurse practitioner, community support worker—is authorised to do under their respective licensure or certification. It is governed by state licensing boards, professional codes of ethics, and agency credentialing policies. Editors reviewing staffing plans, job descriptions, supervision agreements, and clinical protocols must ensure that task assignments are accurately described and do not inadvertently attribute clinical functions (e.g., prescribing, diagnosing) to non-licensed staff. 'Scope of practice' is always rendered as an open compound and is not hyphenated except as a compound modifier.
