Atrioventricular septal defect (AVSD), also known as endocardial cushion defect or atrioventricular canal defect, is a complex congenital heart malformation involving the atrioventricular valves and septal structures. The condition is classified as complete (involving both atrial and ventricular septal defects with a common atrioventricular valve) or partial (primarily an atrial septal defect with a cleft mitral valve). AVSD is strongly associated with Down syndrome, occurring in approximately 40% of children with trisomy 21. The defect results from abnormal development of the endocardial cushions during fetal heart formation. Surgical repair typically involves patch closure of septal defects and reconstruction or replacement of abnormal atrioventricular valves.
