The Bidirectional Glenn Shunt, also known as a Bidirectional Cavopulmonary Connection (BCPC), is a palliative surgical procedure typically performed as the second stage in the management of single ventricle congenital heart defects. This operation connects the superior vena cava directly to both pulmonary arteries, allowing blood from the upper body to flow directly to the lungs while the single ventricle continues to pump blood to both the body and the lungs from the lower body. This intermediate step reduces volume load on the ventricle and prepares the pulmonary circulation for eventual Fontan completion.
