Cyanotic congenital heart disease encompasses cardiac malformations that result in systemic arterial desaturation, typically manifesting as central cyanosis or blue discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes. These defects involve either right-to-left shunting of blood or mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood within the heart. Common examples include tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of great arteries, and single ventricle lesions. The degree of cyanosis correlates with the severity of desaturation and may worsen with exertion or crying in infants. Long-term complications include clubbing, polycythemia, and increased risk of stroke.
