Infundibular Stenosis
Pronunciation: in-fun-DIB-you-lar
Narrowing of the muscular portion of the right ventricular outflow tract below the pulmonary valve, commonly seen in tetralogy of Fallot.
Full Definition
Infundibular stenosis refers to obstruction of the right ventricular outflow tract at the level of the muscular infundibulum, located below the pulmonary valve. This type of subvalvular stenosis is characteristically seen in tetralogy of Fallot but can also occur in isolation. The stenosis may be fixed (due to muscular hypertrophy) or dynamic (due to muscular contraction). Severity can range from mild to severe, affecting the degree of right-to-left shunting and symptoms. Surgical management typically involves infundibulectomy or patch enlargement of the outflow tract.
Usage
Usage note: Often described with pressure gradients measured by Doppler echocardiography or catheterization.
