Pulmonary Stenosis

A congenital heart condition characterized by narrowing of the pulmonary valve or surrounding structures, impeding blood flow from the right ventricle to the lungs.

Full Definition

Pulmonary stenosis is a congenital heart defect involving obstruction to blood flow from the right ventricle to the pulmonary circulation. The stenosis can occur at the valvular level (most common), subvalvular (infundibular), or supravalvular level. Severity ranges from mild to critical, with severe cases presenting in the neonatal period with cyanosis and heart failure. Valvular pulmonary stenosis often presents with a characteristic systolic murmur and may be associated with other congenital heart defects. Treatment options include balloon valvuloplasty for valvular stenosis or surgical intervention for more complex forms.
