Pulmonary Vein Stenosis

Narrowing of one or more pulmonary veins, causing obstruction of blood flow from the lungs to the left atrium.

Full Definition

Pulmonary vein stenosis is a condition characterized by narrowing of the pulmonary veins that carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium. This can be congenital or acquired, often developing after surgical repair of total anomalous pulmonary venous return. The stenosis leads to increased pulmonary venous pressure, pulmonary edema, and reduced cardiac output. Treatment options include balloon dilation, stent placement, or surgical reconstruction, though outcomes can be challenging due to high rates of restenosis.

Usage

Usage note: Often abbreviated as PVS or PV stenosis in clinical notes.
