Systemic-to-Pulmonary Shunt

A systemic-to-pulmonary shunt is a palliative surgical procedure that creates an artificial connection between the systemic arterial circulation and the pulmonary arteries. These shunts are designed to increase pulmonary blood flow in conditions with decreased pulmonary circulation, such as pulmonary atresia or severe tetralogy of Fallot. Common types include the Blalock-Taussig shunt and central shunts. The procedure provides temporary improvement in oxygenation while preserving options for future definitive repair.
