Systemic Venous Baffle

A surgically created pathway directing systemic venous return to the pulmonary circulation in atrial switch operations.

Full Definition

A systemic venous baffle is an intra-atrial pathway constructed during atrial switch operations (Mustard or Senning procedures) to redirect systemic venous blood flow. In these procedures, systemic venous return from the superior and inferior vena cavae is baffled through the left atrium to the right ventricle and pulmonary circulation. The baffle is typically constructed using pericardium or synthetic material in Mustard procedures, or native atrial tissue in Senning procedures. Long-term complications can include baffle obstruction, leaks, or arrhythmias.

Usage note: Distinguish from pulmonary venous baffles; specify which limb (superior or inferior) when describing baffle complications.
