Full Definition
Total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR) is a complex congenital heart defect in which all four pulmonary veins fail to connect normally to the left atrium and instead drain into the systemic venous system. This condition is classified by the site of connection: supracardiac (to superior vena cava or innominate vein), cardiac (to coronary sinus or right atrium), infracardiac (below the diaphragm), or mixed. The condition results in mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, causing cyanosis. An atrial septal defect or patent foramen ovale is necessary for survival to allow blood to reach the left side of the heart. Surgical repair is typically required in infancy and involves redirecting the pulmonary veins to the left atrium.
