Microthermal treatment zones (MTZs) are the fundamental unit of effect in fractional photothermolysis. Each MTZ is a narrow cylinder of coagulated or ablated tissue extending through the epidermis and into the dermis, flanked by untreated tissue that provides a reservoir of viable cells for regeneration. Treatment density (the percentage of skin surface covered by MTZs per session) and depth are key parameters that editors may encounter in clinical study methods sections and device specification documents. MTZ should be expanded on first use as 'microthermal treatment zone (MTZ)'.
