A temporary darkening of the skin at a site of prior inflammation or injury, common after cosmetic dermatology procedures in patients with higher Fitzpatrick skin types.

Full Definition

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a reactive increase in melanin production that occurs as a result of cutaneous inflammation or trauma, including laser treatments, chemical peels, injections, and acne lesions. It manifests as flat, discoloured patches—brown, tan, or grey—at the site of the original insult. PIH is more prevalent and more persistent in individuals with Fitzpatrick skin types IV–VI due to higher baseline melanocyte activity. It is a key safety consideration in the risk–benefit discussion of many cosmetic procedures. Editors should hyphenate 'post-inflammatory' as a compound modifier and use the abbreviation PIH only after first full use.

Usage note: Always hyphenate 'post-inflammatory'. Distinguish from melasma, which is hormonally driven, and from post-inflammatory hypopigmentation, which involves loss of pigment.
