cryolipolysis

Pronunciation: cry-oh-LIP-oh-lie-sis

Non-surgical fat reduction technique using controlled cooling to destroy adipocytes.

Full Definition

Cryolipolysis is a non-invasive body contouring procedure that uses precisely controlled cooling to target and destroy subcutaneous fat cells without damaging surrounding tissues. The technique is based on the principle that fat cells are more susceptible to cold injury than other cell types. During treatment, a specialized applicator applies controlled cooling to specific areas, causing fat cells to undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death). The destroyed fat cells are then naturally eliminated by the body's lymphatic system over several weeks to months, resulting in gradual fat reduction in the treated area.

Usage

Usage note: Often branded as CoolSculpting; distinguish from general cryotherapy in documentation.

In Context

  • "Cryolipolysis results typically become visible 8-12 weeks after treatment as the body processes the destroyed fat cells." — patient information brochure
  • "Contraindications for cryolipolysis include cold-induced urticaria and cryoglobulinemia." — treatment screening protocol
