retraction

Pulling back or shortening of tissues, often an unwanted complication of healing.

Full Definition

The process by which scar tissue contracts during healing, causing tissues to pull inward or shorten from their intended position. In cosmetic surgery, retraction can affect surgical outcomes by creating asymmetry, distortion, or functional problems. Common examples include eyelid retraction following blepharoplasty, nipple retraction after breast surgery, or scar contracture that distorts facial features. Prevention involves proper surgical technique, adequate tissue support, and sometimes the use of tissue grafts or flaps.
