rippling

Visible or palpable wrinkling of breast implant shell that can be seen or felt through the skin.

Full Definition

Rippling refers to the visible or palpable wrinkling or folding of a breast implant that can be detected through the skin. This complication occurs when the implant shell develops folds or wrinkles that become apparent due to insufficient soft tissue coverage. Rippling is more common with saline implants, subglandular placement, and in patients with thin skin and minimal breast tissue. The phenomenon is most noticeable at the outer edges of the breasts and may be more apparent when leaning forward or during certain movements. Prevention strategies include choosing appropriate implant type and size, adequate soft tissue coverage, and proper surgical technique. Treatment may require implant exchange or repositioning.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish between visible rippling (seen) and palpable rippling (felt but not seen).
