tissue expander

Inflatable medical device used to gradually stretch skin and create additional tissue for reconstruction.

Full Definition

A tissue expander is an inflatable medical device used in plastic surgery to gradually stretch skin and underlying tissues to create additional tissue for reconstruction or cosmetic procedures. The device consists of a silicone balloon with a port for saline injection, allowing controlled expansion over weeks to months. In cosmetic surgery, tissue expanders are commonly used in breast reconstruction following mastectomy, scalp reconstruction for hair restoration, and correction of congenital defects. The expansion process stimulates new tissue growth and skin elasticity, providing adequate coverage for subsequent reconstruction. The device is typically removed and replaced with a permanent implant or used in conjunction with flap procedures.

Usage

Usage note: Specify volume capacity and expansion schedule in documentation.
