craniotomy

Surgical procedure involving the temporary removal of a portion of skull bone to access the brain or correct cranial deformities.

Full Definition

A craniotomy is a neurosurgical procedure where a section of the skull (bone flap) is temporarily removed to provide access to the brain or to reshape cranial anatomy. In craniofacial surgery, craniotomies are performed to correct craniosynostosis, remove cranial tumors, or address traumatic injuries. The bone flap is typically replaced and secured with plates and screws after the underlying procedure is completed. The procedure requires careful planning to avoid damage to critical structures and ensure proper healing.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from craniectomy, where bone is removed permanently.
