Distractors can be internal (buried beneath the skin) or external (with transcutaneous pins), and they come in various configurations including unidirectional, bidirectional, and multivector devices. In craniofacial surgery, distractors are commonly used for mandibular lengthening, maxillary advancement, and cranial vault expansion. The device must remain in place during the distraction phase and subsequent consolidation period until new bone formation is complete.
