apneic oxygenation

A technique in which high-flow oxygen is delivered to a passive, non-breathing patient to maintain arterial oxygen saturation during airway management.

Full Definition

Apneic oxygenation exploits the phenomenon of mass-flow oxygenation, whereby oxygen moves passively from the upper airway into the alveoli even in the absence of respiratory effort, provided a patent airway exists. In dental anesthesiology it is used during procedural periods when ventilation is briefly suspended—such as during intubation attempts or deep sedation. High-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO) at rates of 15–70 L/min is commonly employed. The technique can extend the safe apnea period, buying the clinician critical extra seconds before oxygen desaturation occurs. Editors should note the distinction from active ventilation: apneic oxygenation does not eliminate CO₂ accumulation.

Usage note: Do not conflate with pre-oxygenation, which occurs before induction; apneic oxygenation is maintained during the apneic phase itself.
