Electrocardiography (ECG) in the dental anesthesiology setting typically involves a three-lead or five-lead continuous display on the patient monitor during moderate-to-deep sedation and general anesthesia. It allows the anesthesia provider to detect arrhythmias, bradycardia, tachycardia, ST-segment changes, and drug-induced conduction abnormalities in real time. While a standard dental operatory ECG is not a diagnostic-quality 12-lead study, it provides essential safety information for the anesthesia team. Documentation must record the baseline rhythm, any intraoperative changes, and interventions performed. Editors should note that 'electrocardiography' (the process) differs from 'electrocardiogram' (the tracing produced) and from 'electrocardiograph' (the machine), and these terms should not be used interchangeably.
