The laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is a supraglottic device inserted blindly into the hypopharynx so that its elliptical cuff encircles the glottic opening, creating a low-pressure seal. It is widely used in ambulatory dental anesthesia for procedures of short-to-moderate duration where full tracheal intubation is not required. Unlike an endotracheal tube, the LMA does not protect against aspiration in high-risk patients.
