Scavenging System

Equipment designed to collect and remove waste anesthetic gases from the operatory, protecting dental personnel from chronic occupational exposure.

Full Definition

A scavenging system consists of a collection device (typically a reservoir bag attached to the nasal hood), transfer tubing, and an interface that routes exhaled and leaked nitrous oxide–oxygen away from the breathing zone and either to a central vacuum system or an activated-charcoal adsorber canister. NIOSH and OSHA mandate scavenging equipment whenever nitrous oxide is used in dental offices to maintain ambient nitrous oxide levels below 25 ppm. Proper documentation of scavenging system maintenance, filter replacement, and leak testing is required in many state dental board compliance records.
