Amelogenesis is the highly regulated developmental process in which ameloblast cells secrete and mineralise enamel matrix proteins to produce the hardest tissue in the human body. It occurs in two main phases: the secretory phase, during which organic matrix is laid down, and the maturation phase, during which mineral content increases. Disruption at any stage can produce developmental defects such as amelogenesis imperfecta. Editors working on dental hygiene content must distinguish this term from dentinogenesis and cementogenesis, which describe the formation of dentin and cementum respectively.
