NSPT encompasses all mechanical and chemotherapeutic interventions performed to manage periodontal disease without surgical intervention. It is considered the cornerstone of periodontal care and serves both as definitive treatment for moderate disease and as the preparatory phase before evaluating the need for surgery. Components may include supra- and subgingival debridement, locally delivered antimicrobials, host modulation therapy, and intensive patient education. Following an NSPT course, a re-evaluation appointment assesses tissue response, typically six to eight weeks after completion. Editors must spell out NSPT on first use in any clinical document and ensure it is not conflated with 'SRP' (scaling and root planing), which is only one component of NSPT.
