Occlusal Radiograph

An intraoral radiograph taken with a large film or sensor held between the patient's teeth, providing a broad view of the palate, floor of mouth, or dental arch in cross-section.

Occlusal radiographs are taken using a larger-format intraoral film or digital sensor placed on the occlusal plane, allowing imaging of a broad area of the maxilla or mandible. They are used to locate salivary stones (sialoliths) in the floor of the mouth, detect supernumerary teeth, assess the extent of cysts or fractures, and evaluate the anterior palate. Editors should note that 'occlusal radiograph' does not refer to a radiograph of the bite (occlusion) but to the positioning technique in which the sensor is placed in the occlusal plane. The term is sometimes confused with bitewing radiographs, which also use an occlusal bite-wing tab but have a different projection geometry and purpose.

Usage note: Clarify 'occlusal radiograph' refers to the sensor placement technique, not to imaging the occlusion. Specify 'maxillary' or 'mandibular' occlusal radiograph for precision.
