Oral epithelium forms the outermost layer of the oral mucosa and is classified according to the degree of keratinisation: orthokeratinised (no nuclei in superficial cells), parakeratinised (nuclei retained), or non-keratinised (buccal mucosa, floor of mouth, ventral tongue). The type of epithelium at a given site reflects its exposure to mechanical forces and is relevant to the assessment of mucosal lesions. Editors working on oral medicine or dental hygiene content must use the correct subtype when discussing mucosal pathology; 'keratinised' and 'non-keratinised' are not interchangeable. The term should be two words and is not hyphenated in standard usage.
