Panoramic Radiograph
A single extraoral radiographic image capturing the entire dentition, jaws, temporomandibular joints, and surrounding structures on one film or sensor.
Full Definition
A panoramic radiograph (also called an orthopantomogram or OPG) is produced by a rotating X-ray source and detector that move in synchrony around the patient's head, producing a flat representation of the curved dental arches. It provides a broad overview useful for identifying pathology such as impacted teeth, cysts, bone loss patterns, and developmental anomalies, but offers less detail than periapical radiographs for interproximal caries diagnosis. Editors should note that 'panoramic radiograph', 'panorex', 'OPG', and 'panograph' are all encountered in dental records; 'panoramic radiograph' is the preferred formal term. 'Panograph' is considered informal and should be avoided in clinical documents.
Usage
Usage note: Preferred formal term is 'panoramic radiograph'. 'OPG' is acceptable on second reference. Avoid 'panograph' and 'panorex' in formal or published clinical text.
