Remineralisation

The natural or therapeutically enhanced process by which minerals, primarily calcium and phosphate ions, are redeposited into demineralised tooth structure to reverse early caries lesions.

Full Definition

Remineralisation is the counterpart to demineralisation in the caries process; it occurs when the oral pH rises above the critical level of approximately 5.5 for enamel and 6.5 for dentin, allowing calcium and phosphate ions to reintegrate into the tooth's crystal lattice. Fluoride significantly enhances remineralisation by facilitating the formation of fluorapatite, which is more acid-resistant than the original hydroxyapatite. Dental hygiene interventions targeting remineralisation include prescription fluoride, casein phosphopeptide–amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) products, and dietary counselling. Note the British/Australian spelling 'remineralisation' versus the American spelling 'remineralization'; editors should apply the appropriate convention consistently.
