Tooth morphology encompasses the external anatomy of teeth — cusp ridges, marginal ridges, fossae, grooves, and root trunk length and form — as well as internal features such as pulp chamber and canal configuration. In dental hygiene practice, a thorough understanding of tooth morphology is essential for effective scaling, root planing, and sealant placement, as instrument angulation must accommodate root concavities, furcations, and developmental grooves. Editors working on dental hygiene textbooks or clinical guidelines must verify that surface anatomy terms (for example, mesial, distal, buccal, lingual, occlusal) are used precisely and consistently. The term should be two words and not hyphenated.
