An ultrasonic scaler is an electrically powered instrument that operates by converting electrical energy into mechanical vibration at frequencies between 18,000 and 50,000 Hz, dislodging deposits from supragingival and subgingival surfaces while simultaneously irrigating with water. Two primary types exist: magnetostrictive and piezoelectric, each producing different tip movement patterns.
