CBCT
Pronunciation: see-bee-see-tee
Also written as: CBCT — Cone Beam Computed Tomography
Cone Beam Computed Tomography; a three-dimensional radiographic imaging modality used in implant planning to assess bone volume, density, and anatomical landmarks.
Full Definition
CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is a specialized form of X-ray imaging that produces volumetric three-dimensional data of the maxillofacial skeleton using a cone-shaped X-ray beam. In dental implantology, CBCT scans are integral to pre-surgical planning, enabling clinicians to measure available bone height and width, identify vital structures such as the inferior alveolar nerve and maxillary sinus, and select appropriate implant dimensions. Editors should note that CBCT is distinct from conventional medical CT; the two should not be used interchangeably in manuscripts. The acronym is always rendered in full capitals with no periods. First use should be followed by the expanded form in parentheses per most journal style guides.
Usage
Usage note: Do not conflate with conventional medical CT. Expand on first use. No periods between letters.
