Collagen Membrane

A resorbable barrier membrane derived from collagen, used in guided bone regeneration to exclude soft tissue from the bone defect while permitting osteogenic cell migration.

Collagen membranes are among the most widely used barrier membranes in implant-related guided bone regeneration (GBR) and guided tissue regeneration (GTR) procedures. Typically derived from bovine, porcine, or equine sources, they are resorbable and eliminate the need for a second surgical retrieval procedure. Editors should note that product descriptions often specify the collagen source and resorption time (e.g., 4–6 weeks vs. 6 months), which are clinically meaningful variables in a study. 'Resorbable' is the preferred spelling over 'reabsorbable' in implant literature. Collagen membranes are frequently paired with bone graft materials in regeneration protocols.
