Emergence Profile

The contour of a prosthetic crown or abutment as it transitions from the implant platform through the soft tissue to the visible tooth form above the gingival margin.

Full Definition

The emergence profile describes the three-dimensional shape of the implant-supported restoration from the point at which it exits the implant platform or bone crest, through the peri-implant soft tissue, and into the oral environment. A correctly designed emergence profile supports the surrounding soft tissue, creating a natural-appearing gingival contour that mimics the cervical anatomy of a natural tooth. Poor emergence profile design can lead to food trapping, aesthetic deficiencies, and difficulty maintaining oral hygiene. Editors should note that 'emergence profile' is an open compound noun and should not be hyphenated. It is distinct from 'implant angulation', which refers to the angle of the implant body, not the prosthetic contour.

Usage

Usage note: Always write as an open compound ('emergence profile'), never hyphenated. Distinguish from implant angulation.
