Flapless Surgery

A minimally invasive implant placement technique in which the mucosa is not reflected, avoiding incision and tissue elevation.

Flapless surgery refers to an implant placement approach in which the surgeon gains access to the underlying bone by creating a small punch incision or tissue core removal rather than raising a conventional mucoperiosteal flap. This technique is associated with reduced post-operative discomfort, shorter healing times, and better preservation of gingival architecture, but requires accurate pre-operative imaging (typically CBCT) to compensate for the limited direct visualisation of bone. In editorial use, 'flapless' is written as a single hyphenated compound adjective when modifying a noun (e.g., 'flapless-surgery protocol') and as an open compound predicatively. Authors sometimes incorrectly use 'minimally invasive' as a synonym; editors should query whether flapless technique is specifically meant.
