Occlusal Loading

The application of bite forces transmitted through a prosthetic restoration to an implant and the surrounding bone.

Full Definition

Occlusal loading refers to the mechanical forces directed onto a dental implant via the overlying prosthetic crown or bridge during masticatory function or parafunctional habits. The timing, magnitude, and direction of occlusal loading are critical parameters in implant treatment planning and outcomes research. Editors working on biomechanics studies or clinical guidelines must distinguish between 'immediate occlusal loading' and 'delayed loading,' and must not use 'occlusal loading' interchangeably with 'functional loading,' as the latter also encompasses lateral and excursive forces. The term appears frequently in finite element analysis papers and must be used consistently with defined load vector conventions described in the methods section.
