Schneiderian Membrane
Pronunciation: shny-DEER-ee-an
The thin mucoperiosteal lining of the maxillary sinus, which must be carefully elevated and preserved during sinus augmentation procedures.
Full Definition
The Schneiderian membrane is the pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium, together with its underlying periosteum, that lines the maxillary sinus. In the context of dental implantology, it is the critical anatomical structure managed during lateral window sinus lift and crestal sinus elevation techniques: the membrane must be elevated intact to create a space for bone graft material. Perforation of the Schneiderian membrane is the most common intraoperative complication of sinus augmentation and is reported in clinical notes and complication logs. Editors should note that the eponym is always capitalised ('Schneiderian', after Conrad Victor Schneider) and the phrase is not hyphenated.
Usage
Usage note: Always capitalise 'Schneiderian' as an eponym. Do not use 'schneiderean' or lowercase variants. If a publication avoids eponyms, 'maxillary sinus membrane' or 'sinus mucoperiosteum' are acceptable substitutes.
