Bonding Agent

A chemical adhesive used in dental laboratories to promote adhesion between a porcelain or composite material and a metal or zirconia substructure.

Full Definition

A bonding agent is a chemical compound applied to a prepared substrate surface to enhance the mechanical and chemical bond between dissimilar dental materials, such as between opaque porcelain and a metal alloy coping or between a resin veneer and a zirconia framework. In laboratory contexts, bonding agents are critical to the longevity and delamination resistance of layered restorations. Editors should note that 'bonding agent' is distinct from a dental adhesive used chairside; in the lab context it specifically refers to the surface-treatment chemistry applied during fabrication. The term is sometimes incorrectly used interchangeably with 'primer,' which is a related but narrower concept.
