Full Definition

A cast metal framework is the precisely engineered alloy skeleton upon which the acrylic saddles, artificial teeth, and connective elements of a removable partial denture (RPD) are built. It is produced by the lost-wax casting technique using a surveyed master cast and a wax pattern that incorporates all designed components, including clasps, rests, major connectors, and minor connectors. The framework must be evaluated for accurate fit on the master cast before acrylic processing begins. Cobalt-chromium is the most common alloy used today, though gold alloys are specified for patients with metal sensitivities or where high ductility is required. Editors should note that 'framework' alone is ambiguous unless the restoration type is specified.
