A thin, precisely fitted cap of metal, ceramic, or zirconia that forms the inner substructure of a dental crown before veneering material is applied.

Full Definition

A coping is the primary substructural element of a crown restoration, designed to fit the prepared tooth or implant abutment with maximum accuracy. It provides the foundational strength over which veneering porcelain or other aesthetic materials are layered. Copings may be cast in metal alloys, pressed from ceramics, or milled from zirconia using CAD/CAM technology. In editorial contexts, 'coping' is frequently confused with 'cap,' which is a layperson's term and should not be used interchangeably in technical laboratory documents. The term is also used in implant dentistry to describe components used for impression transfer.
