Denture base resin is the acrylic polymer—predominantly polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) in heat-cured form—that constitutes the main body of a complete or partial denture, holding the artificial teeth and resting against the oral mucosa. Heat-cured resins are processed under controlled temperature and pressure in a flask to minimise porosity and maximise strength, while auto-polymerising (cold-cure) resins are used for repairs and temporary appliances. The shade and translucency of the resin are selected to harmonise with the patient's gingival tissue colour. Laboratory prescriptions should specify the resin type, shade, and any required characterisation such as veining or pigmentation. Editors should note that 'base plate' is a different, interim material used in fabrication, not the final prosthetic resin.
