Full Definition

Glazing is the terminal heat treatment applied to dental ceramic restorations in which the surface reaches a temperature sufficient to cause slight surface flow, sealing micro-pores and creating a highly polished, reflective surface. It can be achieved either as an auto-glaze (firing the ceramic to its self-glazing temperature) or by applying a thin layer of liquid glaze material before firing. Glaze enhances aesthetics, reduces plaque adhesion, and seals surface porosity. Editors working on laboratory reports or product guides should distinguish between 'glazing' as a process and 'glaze' as the material. Additionally, glazing should not be confused with 'polishing,' which achieves surface smoothness mechanically.
