A heat-resistant duplicate of a prepared tooth model used during the ceramic or wax firing process in dental laboratory fabrication.

Full Definition

A refractory die is a specially prepared stone or phosphate-bonded duplicate of the original die, capable of withstanding the high temperatures involved in porcelain firing or pressing. Unlike standard stone dies, refractory dies do not crack or distort during the thermal cycles of the furnace. They are an essential component in the fabrication of porcelain-fused-to-metal and all-ceramic restorations. Dental editors should note that 'refractory die' and 'working die' are not interchangeable; the working die is used for adaptation and waxing, while the refractory die is used exclusively for firing.
